Yorkie Problems

Yorkie Terriers are one of the most adorable small dog breeds out there and learning yorkie training  is vital to your sanity and that of all people involved.  Unfortunately these cute little things can be a bit naughty when it comes to their behavior.  This doesn’t necessarily mean they need to have a complete personality make-over, but it does mean that specialized training is a must if you want to have a cute dog that is also well trained and manageable in your home.

The Uniqueness of Yorkies

You should know up front that Yorkies aren’t the easiest breed to train.  Yorkies are the kind of dog that will challenge you with their stubbornness and independence.  These little dogs have their own minds and will pursue whatever it is they want with persistent will.

Their cute looks can be deceiving.  You really have to keep in mind that they are a dog and must be trained accordingly—don’t be fooled by their adorableness.  Another important training concept you need to be mindful of is that you can’t treat your Yorkie like a cute little kid.  Your Yorkie should not become accustomed to getting the rewards that a small child might get because they are cute and little.  The minute you start doing that for your Yorkie, you will lose your power in the training relationship.

If you don’t properly master Yorkie training, you are actually going to hurt the dog and put them at risk.  They can’t help their strong will and feisty personality, which are characteristics that could potentially put these little dogs in jeopardy.  With the proper training, you can keep your Yorkies safe and prevent problems.

Yorkie Training 101

Yorkie training begins when they are young pups.  They require extensive amounts of exercise, so you should give them these opportunities on a regular basis.  It is important to keep in mind that Yorkies are actually bred to be hunting dogs.  They are responsible for finding vermin.  If you have that understanding and also know how much energy these little dogs have, you will understand their need to exercise.  If these dogs don’t get to use their energy, there will be negative consequences in your household.

A well-exercised Yorkie will be an easier dog to train.  Training must be well planned and you must be consistent with your Yorkie if you want to do it right.

Yorkies need to be trained in quick five minute sessions.  When they stop listening to you, it’s really difficult to get through to them.  This is why the short session is effective—you give them the information they need to know before they decide to tune you out

There are certain basics you need to cover.  These include commands like “sit,”  “stay,” and “down.”   Yorkies do have a problem with jumping and climbing and have difficulties with those boundaries.  They should be carried up and down stairs and not allowed to jump on your furniture.  These boundaries should be defined when they are very young—as soon as possible.

Another training technique is clicker training.  This is a great technique to employ with Yorkies.  Although they don’t have the best hearing, they respond well to sharp, single noises that a clicker can make.  When used in short periods of time, it can be a great way to accommodate the attention span of a Yorkie.

Rewarding your Yorkie is a great training method.  They do not respond well to punishment since they are stubborn, but positive reinforcement is great.  Yorkies love physical attention and little treats as rewards, so this can work well.

One can become very discouraged with Yorkie training if they don’t know what to do.  It will take time and dedication, but the rewards will pay off tenfold.  You can have an amazing (and cute) dog in your Yorkie when you take the time to learn how to properly train them, and then actually do it.  Yorkie training should occur when they are young to be effective.
